Spinal Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) is a procedure that is intended for the following types of injuries: 1. Herniated and bulging discs without free fragments and are not surgical candidates. 2. Frozen or fixated articulations from adhesion formation (frozen shoulder). 3. Failed low back surgery. 4. Compression syndromes with or without radiculopathies caused from adhesion syndromes. 5. Restricted ranges of motion which causes pain for the patient. 6. Unresponsive to conservative treatment through physical therapy, manual traction, and/or manipulations. 7. Unresponsive pain, which interferes with the function of daily life and sleep patterns. 8. Unresponsive muscle contracture/spasm which is preventing normal daily activities. 9. Post traumatic syndrome from car accidents or sports related injuries.
Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA)
Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) is performed using monitored anesthesia care, usually Diprivan (Propofol). The patient is taken through passive ranges of motion in their cervical, thoracic, and lumbar ranges of motion. Specific adjustments are performed when the elastic barrier of resistance and segmental end range of motion is accomplished. Then stretching of all the adjacent musculature is performed which allows the joints and muscles to work in conjunction with one another. Our focus is to break up the adhesions/scar tissue that has accumulated over years of neglect of injuries. When this is achieved the patient's body will have a much greater range of motion whether in the spinal segments addressed or their shoulders, hips, etc.
Please contact my office to set up an appointment to see whether MUA is an option for you and your injuries. Please view the video below which has a 3 day MUA on an actual patient. The majority of my patients have the same injuries and in the same location. The only difference is how long your body has endured those injuries. Yours in Health, Dr. Todd Cielo
